About This Location

140 Worcester Street in the South End of Boston is a stunning brick home and garage that has been dubbed “Boston’s most Instagrammable house.” Photographers arrive at the Worcester Street home on any given day, regardless of the season or weather, and point smartphones and digital cameras at the front door.

140 Worcester Street is nestled between the Worcester Street Community Garden and a row of traditional South End rowhouses. According to state tax records, it was built around 1900, but it could be older due to shoddy record-keeping. By 1917, it had evolved into the Packard Auto Renting Co., which sold and cached gasoline. Later, in the 1920s and 1930s, the structure housed vendor equipment and was a prominent auto repair establishment.

Paul Readdy Jr., the current owner, stated that his father (Paul Readdy Sr.) purchased the property nearly 80 years ago. According to the City of Boston Archives, Readdy Sr. applied to transform the upper floor of the two-story building into a one-family apartment in 1946. The garage on the first floor was once home to Paul’s Auto Laundry, which specialized in hand car washes. Readdy’s father later went into the refrigerator and equipment repair business, establishing Paul’s Refrigeration Service Inc. in the 1950s. Although Readdy’s father died in 2000, the family business continues, and the garage serves as its headquarters and storage facility.
