About This Location

Nestled in the charming city of Belfast, Maine, the Armistice Bridge, also known as the Belfast Pedestrian Bridge, stands as a living testament to both the city's history and its commitment to creating spaces of beauty and remembrance.

The story of this bridge begins in 1921 when it was first constructed to carry Route 1 across the serene Passagassawaukeag River. It was a bridge conceived not only as a functional necessity but also as a memorial to the brave veterans who served during World War I. For 42 years, it dutifully fulfilled its role, allowing cars to traverse its 1,030-foot span, all the while paying tribute to those who had sacrificed for their country.

However, as Belfast flourished and the demands of a growing city evolved, it became evident that a more substantial bridge was needed. In 1963, a new structure, the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge, was erected a short distance away. This modern marvel took on the responsibility of carrying Route 1 across the river, boasting greater strength and capacity to meet the city's needs.

With the arrival of the new bridge, the original found a new purpose. It transitioned into a pedestrian bridge, becoming a beloved destination for both locals and visitors alike. As the 21st century dawned, the bridge underwent a transformation to make it even more inviting to pedestrians. The 2006 remodel breathed new life into the historic structure. Lamp posts now cast a warm glow, benches beckon for contemplation, and updated railings provide a sense of safety without obstructing the view. A plaque was also thoughtfully added, bearing the names of the World War I veterans from Waldo County, Maine, ensuring their memory lives on.

In 2010, with these enhancements complete, the bridge was formally re-christened as the Armistice Bridge, commemorating the end of the "war to end all wars." Today, it proudly honors veterans while serving as a bridge between Belfast's storied past and its thriving future.

A visit to the Armistice Bridge is an opportunity to pay respects, connect with history, and embrace the beauty of Belfast. As you stroll across, you'll be treated to picturesque views of Belfast Harbor, making it an ideal spot for leisurely walks, peaceful moments of reflection, or simply enjoying a good book by the river. Fishing enthusiasts also find solace in its embrace, casting lines into the serene waters.

The Armistice Bridge reminds us that bridges are not just physical connectors; they are a testament to the enduring spirit of a community and a symbol of the appreciation for those who came before us. It stands proudly as a timeless tribute and a vibrant part of Belfast's heritage and future.
