About This Location

Nestled along the picturesque coast of Narragansett, Rhode Island, Black Point is a captivating 40+ acre park renowned for its stunning trail system and scenic ocean views. The park's centerpiece is the Black Point Trail, an enchanting pathway that winds its way from the parking area along the ocean, treating visitors to a mesmerizing coastal experience.

As visitors meander along the Black Point Trail, they are greeted by steep cliffs offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. The rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the rocky coastline enhances the enchanting ambiance. Many adventurous visitors explore the rocky cliffs, examining tide pools, although caution is advised due to the potential slipperiness of the surfaces and the threat posed by large waves.

One of the highlights along the trail is the Scarborough Beach Ruins, also known as the Windswept Mansion Ruins or the Black Point Ruins. Constructed in 1895, this mansion once stood as a grand and luxurious oceanfront retreat. Over the years, the mansion changed hands and, following a catastrophic fire in 1974, it was ultimately razed. Despite its demise, the foundation and remnants of sidewalls still stand, creating a hauntingly beautiful and historically intriguing site for exploration.

After the demise of the Windswept Mansion, the State of Rhode Island took ownership of the property in 1980, safeguarding it from potential commercial development. The park, now known as Black Point, was established, serving as a testament to the state's commitment to preserving its natural and historical treasures. The Friends of Black Point, a community organization, collaborates with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management to support the upkeep, maintenance, and improvements of the area. Additionally, the organization strives to instill a sense of responsibility and good stewardship among those who enjoy the park.

With about 20 available parking spots at the Black Point Trailhead along Ocean Road, parking is conveniently free. However, the lot can fill up swiftly on sunny summer days. Alternatively, visitors can park at Scarborough Beach and embark on a walk to explore the ruins, noting that the beach parking lot may charge a fee during the summer months. Whether delving into the captivating trails or exploring the historic remnants of the Windswept Mansion, Black Point stands as a testament to the region's natural beauty and rich history, inviting visitors to savor its coastal charm responsibly.
