Bolton Potholes is a spectacular five-star rated waterfall and swimming hole located in Bolton, Vermont. The waterfall has a total height of about 50 feet and it can be found along Joiner Brook. Joiner Brook features pretty decent water flow year-round, but it is best to visit during the spring to see it truly roaring. The months of April, May, and June are recommended for visitors hoping to see the falls in peak condition. That said, Bolton Potholes are wonderful to visit year-round. It is popular among photographers during the spring, swimmers during the summer, and foliage seekers during the fall. No matter when you visit, you’ll have a great time!

The waterfall itself drops in a unique formation consisting of plunges and cascades. There are several different drops that make up the falls and at the base of many of these are great pools. Many of the pools are deep and clear. For this reason, the Bolton Potholes have been considered one of the greatest swimming holes in Vermont. That said it is also known as one of the most deadly. Be extremely careful if you attempt to swim here. Water conditions matter a lot.

Accessing the waterfall is super quick and easy. The waterfall is located on private property, but respectful visitors have long been welcomed. Parking is available along the Bolton Valley Access Road and there are several dedicated spaces. Be sure to pull over completely off the road and only park in permitted spaces. Ultimately, this a wonderful waterfall to visit year-round, and it’s a great kid-friendly and dog-friendly spot too!

Parking Notes:
Parking used to be available along the Bolton Valley Access Road. A dedicated lot was later established, but has since been closed. As of 2023, there is no closer and public parking area. A rise in popularity and deaths at the falls have led to it being more closed off.
