About This Location

Nestled within the breathtaking expanse of Acadia National Park in Mount Desert, Maine, Bubble Rock stands as an iconic geological marvel and a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts. Perched precariously on the eastern edge of the summit of South Bubble, this colossal boulder is arguably the most renowned in the entire state.

Bubble Rock serves as an extraordinary example of a glacial erratic, a massive rock transported to its current location by the powerful forces of ancient glaciers. Geological experts estimate that this imposing rock, crafted from coarse-grained white granite, originated approximately 40 miles to the north near Lucerne. Notably distinct from the familiar pink granite of Mount Desert Island, Bubble Rock is a colossal 100-ton testament to the geological history of the region.

Accessing Bubble Rock and the 768-foot peak of South Bubble is an adventure in itself, achievable via the Bubbles Divide Trail and Bubbles Trail. The trailhead and parking lot are conveniently located on the Park Loop Road, a little over a mile south of Bubble Pond and approximately 1.5 miles north of Jordan Pond House.

Embarking on the Bubbles Divide Trail from the parking lot, hikers are treated to a graded ascent, swiftly crossing the Jordan Pond Carry Trail. As the trail winds westward, it merges with the Bubbles Trail from North Bubble, guiding explorers to the summit's divide. While the Bubbles Divide Trail descends straight ahead, the journey continues left onto the Bubbles Trail for the ultimate destination.

En route, hikers encounter a short spur trail on the right leading to a large boulder (distinguished from Bubble Rock) and a ledge outlook offering a splendid view of the elongated ridgeline of Sargent Mountain. Continuing along the main trail, a break in the tree cover unveils the open summit. A brief detour on the left leads to the cliff's edge and the awe-inspiring sight of Bubble Rock.

From atop South Bubble, a panorama unfolds, revealing views of Jordan Pond, Pemetic Mountain, Penobscot Mountain, and the vast expanse of the ocean off Seal Harbor. Bubble Rock, with its precarious perch and geological significance, has rightfully earned its place as one of the most visited and celebrated landmarks in Acadia National Park. The journey to Bubble Rock not only offers a glimpse into the fascinating geological history of the region but also rewards hikers with spectacular vistas that showcase the natural beauty of Mount Desert, Maine.
