About This Location

Nestled within the vast and secluded expanse of Second College Grant in New Hampshire, the Diamond Peaks form a steep, circular ridge that rises less than a mile from the Maine border. This unique geological feature, owned and administered solely by Dartmouth College since 1807, stands as one of the outstanding natural wonders within this remote municipality. Second College Grant, with zero permanent population, serves as a playground for Dartmouth students engaging in outdoor activities and a valuable resource for the college's research efforts and revenue generated through timber harvests.

Despite their relatively modest elevation compared to neighboring mountains, the Diamond Peaks captivate with their circular ridge and massive cliffs, creating a visually striking landscape. Dartmouth College has established and maintains a hiking trail that spans the length of the Diamond Peaks Ridge, offering outdoor enthusiasts and hikers a chance to explore this captivating terrain. The trail weaves through the wilderness, passing by numerous breathtaking overlooks that showcase the natural beauty of the region.

To access the Diamond Peaks, the preferred route is the Diamond Peaks Trail, a 6.4-mile out-and-back trail rated as moderate and well-marked for hikers. The trail provides an opportunity to immerse oneself in the pristine wilderness of Second College Grant. However, it's important to note that a portion of the trail follows Dead Diamond Road, which is closed off to visitors. As a result, hikers need to traverse about 2.5 miles along this dirt road to reach the trailhead. Despite this, the trail offers a manageable elevation gain of 971 feet, culminating in spectacular views from the peaks.

The trailhead and parking area are conveniently located on Dead Diamond Road in Second College Grant. Access Dead Diamond Road by heading 0.3 miles west of the Maine/New Hampshire border on the north side of Rt. 16. After driving 0.2 miles down the road, visitors can find designated parking spaces on the right, providing a starting point for the memorable hike to the Diamond Peaks. The journey along the Diamond Peaks Trail not only showcases the natural wonders of this remote region but also offers a peaceful escape into the heart of Second College Grant's pristine wilderness.
