About This Location

Duck Brook Falls is a captivating hidden treasure nestled within the picturesque Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine. This enchanting waterfall is concealed beneath the graceful Duck Brook Bridge, a historic structure that adds to the charm of the location. Duck Brook Bridge, an architectural gem constructed in 1929, stands as the 11th among 17 bridges that grace the 57 miles of carriage roads on Mount Desert Island, built between 1917 and 1940.

The bridge serves as the conduit for the Witch Hole Pond Loop portion of Hulls Cove Road, extending over Duck Brook to connect with the New Eagle Lake motor road. This particular area held special significance to John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who envisioned it as the "grand northern terminus" of his carriage road system. His plans included the creation of magnificent vistas of Frenchman Bay, accessible via the adjacent Paradise Hill Loop Road.

Duck Brook Falls itself, tucked beneath the bridge's arches, is a delightful natural wonder. The waterfall descends gracefully over a series of cascades, boasting a vertical drop of approximately 10-15 feet. One of its most charming features is the consistent flow of water, although the falls are at their most majestic during the spring months when snowmelt and rainstorms swell Duck Brook's waters.

While Duck Brook Falls remains somewhat of a hidden gem within Acadia National Park, it is important to note that there is no official maintained path leading to the waterfall. Visitors who wish to explore and admire this natural beauty should exercise caution, as the terrain can be steep and slippery. The most favorable vantage point for viewing the falls is from the eastern side of the bridge.

For those eager to visit Duck Brook Falls by foot, the Duck Brook Trail provides an excellent option. This easy 2-mile out-and-back trail offers a scenic journey through the park's lush landscapes. Duck Brook Trail is very family-friendly as it features just 190 feet of elevation gain, wide trails, and well-marked trees. It typically takes 45-60 minutes to finish the trek to the bridge/waterfall and back to the trailhead. The trailhead can be found at a dirt parking lot on Eden Street, providing a convenient starting point for your adventure.

Discovering Duck Brook Falls in Acadia National Park is a rewarding experience, offering a serene and enchanting escape into nature's beauty. Whether you're drawn by the historic allure of Duck Brook Bridge or the mesmerizing cascades of the waterfall, this hidden gem promises a memorable visit for nature enthusiasts and explorers alike.
