Description
One of Pittsburg’s primary attractions is First Connecticut Lake which is located just seven miles north of Pittsburg’s town center. First Lake is a glacier lake that is 163 feet deep at its deepest point. It is the largest of the four numbered Connecticut Lakes in New Hampshire and the fifth largest lake in the state. Third Lake is one of New Hampshire’s most pristine lakes, surrounded by mountains and a nearly undeveloped coastline. Only about 15% of the coastline is developed. Dams control the water level of the lake, so the level can change quickly.
In the summer, children play in a safe, shallow beach area, while stronger swimmers venture out to the nearby islands. Dogs enthusiastically wag their tails as they chase balls and paddle around as families grill burgers and dine. Picnic in the sun or in the shade. Canoeing, kayaking, and water skiing are all options. Bathrooms are convenient and well-kept. There is plenty of parking and 3 boat ramps. First Connecticut Lake is also a popular location in the winter among anglers looking for lake trout and perch. The dates for ice-in and ice-out vary, although they normally occur between late December and mid-April.
First Lake is a true gem of northern New Hampshire and is well worth checking out! Head out to the lake during sunrise/sunset for an extra pop of color!
