About This Location

The Flume Covered Bridge, sometimes referred to as the Pemigewasset River Covered Bridge, stands as a picturesque gem within the stunning landscapes of Franconia Notch State Park in Lincoln, New Hampshire. This charming covered bridge has captured the hearts of visitors for decades, its history and allure adding to the natural beauty of The Flume.

The origins of this bridge have been the subject of debate, with some suggesting that it was built elsewhere and later relocated to its current site, where it serves a vital purpose. However, many believe that it was constructed specifically for its present location in 1871. The Lincoln Turnpike Company, established by legislative decree, secured the rights to build a road from the main highway, U.S. Route 3, to a point near the base of The Flume. The bridge played an integral role in providing access to this natural wonder.

While the Flume Covered Bridge primarily serves as a pathway for pedestrians, including visitors exploring The Flume and maintenance vehicles, its historical significance is undeniable. The bridge's striking Paddleford truss design adds to its allure, attracting both photographers and nature enthusiasts. Painted in a vibrant red hue, the bridge is particularly captivating during the autumn months when New Hampshire's foliage reaches its peak.

Measuring 50 feet in length and 21 feet in width, this covered bridge is not only visually captivating but also eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Its World Guide Number, 29-05-05, and New Hampshire Covered Bridge number 39, further highlight its significance within the state.

Beyond its own charm, the Flume Covered Bridge serves as a gateway to a wealth of natural wonders in the area, including Avalanche Falls, The Basin, Kinsman Falls, and Mount Liberty, all located within a scenic 2-mile radius. For visitors seeking a taste of history and a breathtaking connection to the beauty of Franconia Notch State Park, the Flume Covered Bridge stands as a testament to the enduring allure of covered bridges in New Hampshire.
