About This Location

Franconia Ridge, a prominent feature of the Franconia Range within New Hampshire's White Mountains, is a breathtaking natural wonder. This remarkable ridge forms the spine of the Franconia Range and connects a series of major summits, making it a must-visit destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts.

The Franconia Ridge Trail, which also coincides with the Appalachian Trail from Mount Lafayette to Mount Liberty, winds its way across this extraordinary ridge, traversing several iconic mountains along the way. The notable summits on Franconia Ridge include Mount Lafayette, Mount Lincoln, Mount Truman, Little Haystack, Mount Liberty, and Mount Flume.

One of the most popular hikes along the Franconia Ridge is the Franconia Ridge Loop, covering a distance of 8.9 miles. This loop adventure encompasses the Falling Waters Trail, the Franconia Ridge Trail, the Greenleaf Trail, and the Old Bridle Path. It offers hikers the opportunity to experience the majority of the above-treeline section of the ridge, making it a strenuous but immensely rewarding trek. With a cumulative elevation gain of over 3,900 feet, this hike takes explorers across the rocky summits of Little Haystack Mountain, Mount Lincoln, and Mount Lafayette.

Renowned travel author Jonathan Waterman, in collaboration with National Geographic, recognized the Franconia Ridge Loop as one of the "World’s Best Hikes: 20 Dream Trails." This spectacular hike in Franconia Notch State Park takes approximately seven hours to complete, spanning nine miles and offering breathtaking views of the White Mountains. It's worth noting that this popular hike can see up to 700 hikers per day during peak seasons, according to the Appalachian Mountain Club.

Despite its allure, the exposed nature of the ridge and the unpredictable weather conditions in the White Mountains make this hike more challenging and potentially hazardous than it may seem. Accidents, including falls and exposure-related issues, are not uncommon. It is crucial to exercise caution, be well-prepared, and stay aware of changing weather conditions while hiking Franconia Ridge.

Parking for the trail is available on both sides of the interstate. If you choose to park on the southbound side, a path beneath the interstate leads to the trailhead. A nominal fee of $3 per day is typically charged, and payment is often collected at a self-pay station. Keep in mind that parking areas can fill up quickly, particularly during the summer and fall months, so planning your visit on weekdays or arriving early is advisable.

The allure of Franconia Ridge lies in its unparalleled natural beauty and panoramic vistas. It is undeniably one of the most magnificent sights to behold in the entire state of New Hampshire. Whether you're an experienced hiker or a novice explorer, the allure of this stunning ridge is sure to captivate your heart and leave you with unforgettable memories of the White Mountains.
