About This Location

Grist Mill Covered Bridge, located in the picturesque village of Jeffersonville, Vermont, is a charming wooden bridge with a rich history dating back to 1872. This majestic covered bridge was constructed by local carpenters to provide a vital transportation link for farmers, enabling them to move their goods across the Brewster River. With its enduring beauty and 19th-century New England architecture, Grist Mill Covered Bridge stands as a cherished symbol of Vermont's rural heritage.

Spanning 84 feet in length and 14 feet in width, Grist Mill Covered Bridge is not only a functional structure but also a work of art. Its intricate wooden trusses and classic red exterior make it a quintessential example of covered bridge architecture. While the bridge no longer carries vehicular traffic, it remains accessible to pedestrians, inviting visitors to take a leisurely stroll across its timeworn planks and savor the breathtaking views of the surrounding river and landscape.

Over the years, this historic bridge has been known by several names, including Scott Covered Bridge, Bryant Covered Bridge, and Canyon Covered Bridge. However, it officially bears the name Grist Mill Covered Bridge, paying homage to the bygone grist mill that once operated in close proximity to the bridge. Although the mill has disappeared with time, the bridge's name serves as a reminder of its historical significance. Today, the bridge is part of a park that offers ample opportunities for exploration and enjoyment.

On June 13, 1974, Grist Mill Covered Bridge received the prestigious honor of being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This designation recognizes the bridge's significance as a historic structure worthy of preservation. The National Register of Historic Places is a program established under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, aimed at coordinating and supporting efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archaeological resources. The inclusion of Grist Mill Covered Bridge in this registry is a testament to its enduring cultural and architectural importance. Its National Register reference number is 74000225.

Grist Mill Covered Bridge is one of three covered bridges in the town of Cambridge and one of only nine documented surviving Burr arch bridges in the state of Vermont. While its original use as a transportation route gradually declined in the 20th century, the bridge remained an iconic landmark in the region. By the time it was listed on the National Register, the bridge had begun to show signs of wear and tear. To address its structural needs, an engineering study was conducted in 2001, determining that rehabilitation was necessary to improve the bridge's load rating.

In May 2004, the rehabilitation efforts commenced under the guidance of Blow & Cote Contractors. These extensive restoration efforts allowed the bridge to regain its strength and functionality while preserving its historical character. As a result, Grist Mill Covered Bridge was reopened to traffic on October 13, 2004, ensuring that future generations can continue to admire and appreciate this iconic piece of Vermont's heritage.

Visitors to Grist Mill Covered Bridge will find ample parking just a short distance away at the Brewster River Park, where they can leave their vehicles at no cost. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a covered bridge aficionado, or simply seeking a tranquil spot to enjoy the outdoors, Grist Mill Covered Bridge and its scenic surroundings offer a delightful experience in the heart of Vermont.
