About This Location

Nestled amidst the picturesque landscape of Jackson, New Hampshire, the Honeymoon Covered Bridge, also affectionately known as the Jackson Covered Bridge, stands as a testament to both love and craftsmanship. This stunning covered bridge, with its timeless charm, is not only a vital part of the region's history but also a beloved symbol of romance.

What makes the Honeymoon Covered Bridge particularly significant is its construction legacy. It was built by Charles Austin Broughton, alongside his son Frank, adding an extra layer of historical importance. Charles Broughton was a third-generation bridge builder, and his expertise is reflected in the bridge's sturdy construction.

The bridge gracefully spans the Ellis River, arching a majestic 121 feet. Its primary function is to carry Main Street traffic, making it an integral part of the community's daily life. However, it's not just its practicality that makes this bridge special. The Honeymoon Covered Bridge belongs to a select group of about twenty surviving examples of the Paddleford truss covered bridge, once the leading type of covered bridges in New England. This historical significance adds to its allure, attracting both history enthusiasts and curious travelers.

Over the years, the Honeymoon Covered Bridge has undergone renovations and tasteful additions, ensuring its structural integrity and preserving its vintage charm. In 1899, the Goodrich Falls Electric Company was commissioned to light the bridge, creating a magical nighttime spectacle. The bridge continued to evolve, with a sidewalk added in 1930 for pedestrian safety. In 1965, further improvements were made to enhance visibility and provide parking. In 2001, a significant grant of US$64,000 was awarded to implement a fire safety system, including alarms and sprinklers, ensuring the bridge's longevity. By 2004, these renovations were successfully completed, securing the bridge's place in history.

Today, the Honeymoon Covered Bridge has transformed into a popular tourist destination. It is not only an iconic piece of history but also a testament to enduring love. Couples from far and wide visit the bridge to partake in the charming tradition of sharing a kiss beneath its protective canopy, believing it brings good luck to their union.

Resplendent in its iconic red paint, the Honeymoon Covered Bridge invites visitors to step back in time, celebrating both the enduring craftsmanship of a bygone era and the enduring power of love. This historic landmark is not only eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places but also an embodiment of the romantic spirit that lives on in Jackson, New Hampshire.
