About This Location

Marginal Way in Ogunquit, Maine, stands as one of New England's most cherished seaside walks, beckoning visitors with its sweeping ocean vistas, inviting benches, and easy access to downtown Ogunquit. This mile-long coastal path is not just a scenic gem but also a testament to the enduring love and dedication of those who have worked tirelessly to protect and preserve it.

The story of Marginal Way begins with Josiah Chase, Jr., a conservationist and former State Legislator, who in 1925 gifted the initial plot of this oceanfront property to the Town of Ogunquit. This generous act set the stage for a remarkable legacy of giving. Over the years, additional parcels of land were donated by other Ogunquit landowners, extending the footpath by another 1/4 mile. What started as a one-mile gift grew to encompass approximately 1.25 miles of pristine coastline.

This paved footpath commences at the picturesque Oarweed Cove, winding its way through bayberry, honeysuckle, bittersweet, and fragrant sea roses. These natural wonders frame breathtaking views of the mighty Atlantic Ocean, creating a scene of serene beauty. To enhance your experience, the Marginal Way offers 39 strategically placed benches, inviting you to pause and savor the captivating coastal vistas.

Marginal Way derives its name from its location along the edge of Maine's cliffs, resembling a margin between land and sea. It's a path that has endured the forces of nature, construction booms, and budget constraints over its 85-year history. The Marginal Way Committee of Ogunquit and the non-profit Marginal Way Preservation Fund, a 501(c)(3) organization, have played pivotal roles in safeguarding this coastal treasure.

Today, Marginal Way is a gift to the public, freely accessible and open to all. A leisurely walk along its length takes about 20 minutes one way, making it an ideal destination for visitors seeking a brief but profoundly rewarding coastal experience. Parking is conveniently available near the entrances, and many choose to bring their lunches or snacks to enjoy on the benches while gazing out at the vast expanse of the ocean.

Marginal Way boasts three parking areas: one at the beginning, another at the midpoint, and the last at Perkins Cove, the trail's southern terminus. The path's accessibility ensures that all who wish to partake in this coastal journey can do so with ease. As you meander along Marginal Way, you'll not only savor the natural beauty of the Maine coast but also become a part of its rich history and enduring legacy.

On March 23, 2022, Marginal Way was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a major honor and it ensures the route will be maintained for generations to come. The reference number for Marginal Way is 100007535.
