Description
The Mohegan Bluffs are 200-foot-high clay bluffs on Block Island’s southern shore. The Niantic and Mohegan war took place here in the mid-16th century, giving them their name. Visitors can descend to the beach via a large stairway with 141 steps. The beach is ideal for relaxing, tanning, surfing, and swimming.
The Monhegan Bluffs is 1.7 miles away from the Block Island Ferry terminal in New Shoreham. It takes about 36 minutes to walk to the bluffs, but bicycles are usually the preferred medium of transportation on the island. The bluffs are the 5th destination of the Block Island Bicycle Tour. A small free parking area is also available at the bluffs’ entrance.
