About This Location

The Mohegan Bluffs, located on Block Island's southern shore in New Shoreham, Rhode Island, are a breathtaking natural wonder. Rising 200 feet above the ocean, these clay bluffs have a rich history and offer a striking destination for both locals and visitors.

The name "Mohegan Bluffs" traces its origin to a significant historical event. In the mid-16th century, the Niantic and Mohegan tribes engaged in a war on these very bluffs, resulting in their iconic name. Today, the Mohegan Bluffs serve as a peaceful and picturesque backdrop for various activities.

One of the most notable features of the Mohegan Bluffs is the large stairway consisting of 141 steps that descends to the beach below. This stairway provides convenient access to the pristine sandy shores, making it an ideal spot for relaxation, sunbathing, surfing, and swimming. As you make your way down these steps, you'll be rewarded with mesmerizing views of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Mohegan Bluffs are approximately 1.7 miles away from the Block Island Ferry terminal in New Shoreham. While it's possible to reach the bluffs on foot in about 30-40 minutes, bicycles are the preferred mode of transportation on the island. In fact, the bluffs are the fifth destination on the Block Island Bicycle Tour. For those traveling by car, a small free parking area is available at the entrance to the bluffs.

These stunning bluffs are considered a must-visit location for anyone exploring Block Island. Whether you're a local or a tourist, the Mohegan Bluffs never fail to leave a lasting impression.

Visiting the Mohegan Bluffs is a memorable experience, but it's important to note that access is limited to specific hours. You can explore the bluffs from half an hour before sunrise until half an hour after sunset.

Over the years, erosion has taken its toll on the Mohegan Bluffs, causing them to recede by about 250 feet. This erosion prompted the relocation of the Block Island Southeast Lighthouse, which was moved back approximately 360 feet to prevent it from tumbling into the ocean. The sight of this historic lighthouse, situated just down the road from the bluff overlook and stairway, adds to the charm of the Mohegan Bluffs.

In summary, the Mohegan Bluffs on Block Island offer not only natural beauty and a serene atmosphere but also a glimpse into the island's intriguing history. Whether you're seeking adventure or tranquility, these majestic bluffs have something to offer every visitor.
