Description
Muddy Brook Falls is a beautiful small waterfall located in East Haddam, Connecticut. The waterfall has a total height of 20 feet and it can be found along Muddy Brook. Muddy Brook flows strongest during spring when the snow is melting and also after rainstorms. Although it is best to explore the waterfall in the spring, Muddy Brook Falls is a nice spot to visit year-round. The waterfall itself drops in a unique formation consisting of cascades. There is a lower falls which drops 6 feet and a upper falls section which drops about 14 feet.
Accessing the waterfall is relatively easy. The waterfall is located in Devil’s Hopyard State Park which features a well-marked trail system. Several parking options are available within Devil’s Hopyard State Park, but the parking area closest to Muddy Brook Falls is located on the side of Hopyard Road (State Highway 434). The dirt parking area is small and can hold about 3 cars. From the parking area, the lower falls can be accessed via a 0.25 mile one-way hike. The upper falls require an extra half-mile hike. Ultimately, the hike to see both falls is 1.5 miles out-and-back.
The waterfall trail is family-friendly and well-marked. Exploring the waterfall is a great way to get some hiking in. Dogs are also allowed on the trail and through the entirety of Devil’s Hopyard State Park.
