About This Location

Owls Head Mountain: Vermont's Crown Jewel in Groton State Forest

Nestled within the embrace of Groton State Forest in Vermont, Owls Head Mountain stands as a majestic testament to the natural beauty that graces the Green Mountain State. Offering one of the most exquisite views in Vermont, Owls Head Mountain is a crown jewel in the vast expanse of the 26,164-acre state forest, which spans multiple towns, including Danville, Groton, Marshfield, Orange, Peacham, Plainfield, and Topsham.

With an elevation of 1,457 feet and a clean prominence of 354 feet, Owls Head Mountain beckons visitors to experience a pristine panorama that extends across Kettle Pond, Spruce Mountain, and the distant mountain ranges. What sets this scenic spot apart is the absence of commercial or residential developments, creating an unspoiled haven where nature takes center stage.

The Owls Head Scenic View, officially known as Lanesboro Road, serves as the gateway to this natural wonder. Accessible via Vermont Route 232, this seasonal auto road allows visitors to drive almost to the summit, making the viewpoint easily reachable. A 0.4-mile loop trail from the high parking lot completes the journey to the summit, with the majority of the elevation gained during the drive.

Adding to the allure of Owls Head Mountain is the presence of a captivating stone tower near the summit. From this vantage point, visitors can extend their enjoyment of the stunning views, creating an immersive experience that fosters a deep connection with nature.

The accessibility of Owls Head Mountain is further enhanced by the Owls Head Mountain Trail, a 4-mile out-and-back route that meanders through the forest. With 538 feet of elevation gain, this trail is generally considered easy, making it suitable for a variety of outdoor enthusiasts, from hikers and birders to trail runners. The trailhead, conveniently located along Vermont Route 232, provides parking for those eager to embark on the adventure.

It's worth noting that the auto road, managed by Park Rangers, has specific opening times and seasons, typically from 8am in the morning to sunset. During winter, when the steep dirt road is not plowed, the auto road is closed. Visitors seeking the magic of sunrise or sunset may opt to hike to the viewpoint during these times or if a winter adventure is being sought.

While any day is a good day to visit Owls Head Mountain, the fall season is particularly popular. Vermont's spectacular foliage transforms the landscape into a kaleidoscope of colors, creating a visual masterpiece that draws nature lovers from far and wide. Summer, with its warm embrace, invites picnickers to savor the summit's tranquility.

Owls Head Mountain is more than a destination; it's an invitation to reconnect with nature and find solace in the untouched beauty of Vermont's landscape. Whether you choose to drive or hike, the journey to Owls Head promises an unforgettable experience that resonates with the spirit of exploration and appreciation for the great outdoors.
