About This Location

Packard Hill Covered Bridge is a beautiful modern covered bridge located in Lebanon, New Hampshire. The bridge was built in 1991 to bring Riverside Drive over the Mascoma River.  The bridge spans 76 feet long and is about 25 feet wide. It is currently open to pedestrians and cars. There is a single lane for cars and a covered walkway for pedestrians.

The bridge features a wonderful covered Howe truss design. A Howe truss is a type of truss bridge that consists of chords, verticals, and diagonals with tensioned vertical members and compressed diagonal elements. William Howe created the Howe truss in 1840, and it saw widespread use as a bridge in the mid-to-late 1800s. This design type was used for the Packard Hill Covered Bridge because a Howe truss bridge was built in the same location in the 1850s.
