About This Location

The historic Rockland Breakwater, located in Rockland Harbor, Maine, stands as a remarkable engineering achievement and a vital piece of maritime infrastructure. Stretching nearly a mile, this granite structure serves as a protective barrier against the fierce coastal storms of the Atlantic Ocean, shielding Rockland Harbor from their destructive forces.

In the 19th century, Rockland Harbor was renowned as one of the finest harbors north of Portland, Maine. However, it had a significant vulnerability - its large east-facing opening had no natural shield in place to protect it from the full force of storms sweeping in from the Atlantic. Consequently, the harbor was often battered by severe storms, resulting in damage to boats and infrastructure.

Recognizing the urgent need for a protective breakwater, the town of Rockland spent decades seeking government funding for such a project. In 1880, their efforts bore fruit when the government officially approved the Rockland Breakwater project. The United States Army Corps of Engineers undertook the ambitious construction of the breakwater between 1881 and 1900. The primary objectives were to safeguard Rockland's maritime industries and establish a refuge for coastal vessels navigating these treacherous waters. Upon completion, the impressive granite structure extended 4,346 feet across the mouth of Rockland Harbor, starting from Jameson Point. It required 700,000 tons of locally quarried granite. The Rockland Harbor Breakwater Lighthouse was added to the end of the breakwater in 1902, providing an essential navigational aid for mariners.

The Rockland Breakwater's historical and engineering significance earned it a coveted spot on the National Register of Historic Places on April 11, 2003. This prestigious recognition is a testament to the breakwater's enduring importance in safeguarding maritime activities and coastal transportation. The reference number assigned to the breakwater is 03000203.

Beyond protecting Rockland Harbor, the breakwater played a pivotal role in supporting the local lime, cement, and granite industries. These industries thrived in and around Rockland, providing an abundant supply of local materials that could be used in the breakwater's construction. This not only ensured the breakwater's durability but also bolstered the region's economy.

For present-day visitors, the Rockland Breakwater offers an opportunity to explore this historic marvel. Ample free parking is available at the end of Samoset Road, providing convenient access to the breakwater. Many visitors choose to embark on the exhilarating walk along the breakwater, which culminates at the Rockland Harbor Breakwater Lighthouse. The summer months are the ideal time to visit, as the breakwater offers breathtaking views of Rockland Harbor and the vast expanse of the ocean. You can watch sailboats, lobster boats, ferries, and other vessels navigating these scenic waters. Some visitors also enjoy fishing from the breakwater. While dogs are welcome to accompany you, be aware that the terrain may present challenges for some pets. It's advisable to avoid walking on the breakwater during the winter due to icy conditions, storms, and the lack of fellow visitors. Nonetheless, experiencing the Rockland Breakwater is a captivating journey through history and nature, offering a deeper appreciation for the region's maritime heritage.
