About This Location

Sculptured Rocks is a pretty little waterfall and vast gorge located in Groton, New Hampshire. The waterfall drops about 15 feet and it can be found along the Cockermouth River. The Cockermouth River features good water flow year-round, but is most powerful during the spring when the snow is thawing. Many photographers flock to the waterfall during the months of March, April, and May to capture it at full force. That said, Sculptured Rocks Natural Area is a wonderful place to visit year-round.

The waterfall itself is not extremely impressive. It drops in a series of cascades and small plunges over about 15 feet. There are a number of beautiful pools which are perfect for swimming in on hot summer days. They are not extremely deep, but nice to wade around in. Be careful considering the rocks are often very slippery.

What is most impressive is the gorge surrounding the falls. The 272-acre Sculptured Rocks Natural Area is a singular display of nature’s ferocious yet exquisite workmanship. As the last ice age was coming to an end, the Cockermouth River began to create a little canyon in the bedrock on its route to Newfound Lake. Nature shaped the canyon walls into strange patterns and carved potholes in the bedrock using sand grains floating in the river.

Accessing the waterfall is relatively super easy. The waterfall is located in the Sculptured Rocks Natural Area which is a popular attraction. Visitors can park in the dedicated lot on the south side of Sculptured Rocks Road and then walk just a few hundred feet to the falls. It only takes a few minutes to reach the falls and gorge. The waterfall trail is family-friendly and a great place to reconnect with nature. Dogs are also allowed on the trail and through the entirety of the forest.
