About This Location
Smarts Brook Falls is a beautiful waterfall located in Sandwich, New Hampshire. The waterfall has a total height of about 10 feet and can be found along Smarts Brook. Smarts Brook flows strongest during spring when the snow melts and after heavy rainstorms. Considering the water flow is often highest in the spring, the months of March, April, and May are recommended for visitors hoping to catch the falls at full force. That said, Smarts Brook Falls is a great spot to visit year-round.
The waterfall itself drops in a unique formation consisting of slides and a horsetail. One thing that makes this waterfall stand out among others is its beautiful pool. The pool at the base of the falls is large, deep, and often clear. It is excellent for swimming during the summer months. Some visitors even slide off the waterfall into the pool. But this can be dangerous. As always, be safe and have fun!
Accessing the waterfall is relatively easy. The waterfall is located in the White Mountain National Forest which features a well-marked and expansive trail system. Visitors can park at the dedicated paved parking area on the side of NH Route 49 and then hike 1.10 miles to the falls. The journey is pretty flat and easy. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the falls. Ultimately, the journey out and back is 2.20 miles and features just 243 feet of elevation gain. Dogs are welcome on the trail and at the waterfall too!
