About This Location

Stair Brook Falls is a beautiful waterfall in the James Valley Preserve in Durham, Connecticut. The waterfall is relatively unknown, but it is well-worth checking out. Stair Brook Falls drops about 40 feet in total and it consists of wonderful small plunges, horsetails, and cascades. The waterfall is powered by Stair Brook which often only flows strongly after rainfall and during the springtime when the snow is melting. On warm summer days, you will likely only find a trickle of water flowing down the waterfall.

The waterfall is also relatively easy to access. Visitors can park at the James Valley Preserve by using the small parking area off Stage Coach Road. The parking lot can only hold about 2-3 cars. After parking, follow the blue-blazed trail for about 0.5 miles to the waterfall. If you want to get a better view of the waterfall, you can traverse along the rocks. Be careful as the rocks get extremely slippery.
