About This Location

Stonington Harbor, nestled in the heart of the captivating coastal DownEast region of Maine, stands as a testament to the state's scenic coastal beauty. This small village is a gem in Hancock County, found on the southernmost tip of Deer Isle. Stonington, often described as a hidden oasis, serves as the gateway to the enchanting Merchant's Row archipelago, a sprawling cluster of islands that ranks among the largest of its kind in the world.

Located at the remote end of a picturesque peninsula, the village possesses an undiscovered, secret-garden quality that beckons adventurers and nature enthusiasts.

Stonington Harbor wears multiple identities with grace. It is a year-round working harbor, where the rhythms of life are intimately tied to the ebb and flow of the tides. It's a quintessential fishing harbor, where the sea provides not only a livelihood but a way of life deeply rooted in tradition. Artists flock to Stonington Harbor, inspired by its scenic landscapes and coastal charm. Nature lovers find paradise in the unspoiled wilderness that surrounds the harbor, while its enduring traditions and heritage are lovingly preserved.

Stonington's Harbor is celebrated for its role in the lobster industry. It's a place where more lobster, in terms of pounds, is landed than in any other Maine port. The harbor serves as the vibrant heart of this bustling seaside community.

For photographers, Stonington Harbor is an alluring muse. They flock to capture the essence of coastal Maine fishing, embodied in the picturesque scenes of lobster boats, nets, gear shacks, and weathered docks. There are also plenty of seagulls which attempt to get a free snack from some of the fisherman.

Visitors can conveniently explore the harbor by arriving via car. There are over two dozen parking spaces along the waterfront, right in front of Green Head Lobster Company on Ocean Street. Additionally, parking spaces are available at the Stonington Fish Pier on Fish Pier Road. Of course, if you drive, you will get to enjoy driving over the beautiful Deer Isle Bridge.

At Stonington Harbor, you'll discover a picturesque haven adorned with over 300 lobster boats—true workhorses of the sea—that keep the village alive and bustling. But it's not just about lobster; sailboats, kayaks, and day cruisers also find their place in this thriving maritime community. Along the harbor's edge, you'll find charming inns, markets, cafes, restaurants, and harbor service buildings, all contributing to the unique tapestry of Stonington's coastal life.
