About This Location
Swiftwater Falls, nestled within the picturesque Franconia Notch State Park in Lincoln, New Hampshire, is a captivating natural wonder waiting to be explored. This stunning waterfall, with a total drop of approximately 60 feet, is a testament to the pristine beauty of the White Mountains. Swiftwater Falls is a composition of cascades and plunges, contributing to its unique and mesmerizing character.
The source of this natural spectacle is Dry Brook, a somewhat ironically named stream that consistently maintains a substantial water flow throughout the year. However, the falls are at their most impressive during the late spring and early summer months when the brook swells with the melting snow from the surrounding peaks. While the period from May through July offers the best chance to witness the falls in all their roaring glory, every day presents an opportunity to savor the tranquility and majesty of Swiftwater Falls.
Swiftwater Falls can be found along the Falling Waters Trail, a popular and well-traveled path in the White Mountains. This trail is a favorite among hikers as it leads to the summit of Little Haystack Mountain and offers a challenging yet rewarding experience. However, for waterfall enthusiasts, the allure of the Falling Waters Trail lies in the opportunity to encounter not one, but three spectacular waterfalls.
Stairs Falls, the first in this trilogy of natural wonders, is encountered approximately 0.8 miles from the trailhead. Swiftwater Falls follows shortly after, at a distance of around 0.9 miles from the trailhead. Lastly, the trail leads to the majestic Cloudland Falls, located about a mile from the starting point.
For those who wish to experience the magic of these waterfalls without tackling the entire 5.6-mile Falling Waters Trail, an alternative and more accessible option is available. The hike to Swiftwater Falls and its neighboring cascades is a relatively easy 2-mile out-and-back trek, making it an ideal adventure for families and waterfall aficionados of all ages. Four-legged friends are also welcome, as dogs are allowed on the trail. Of course, feel free to continue the journey up to Little Haystack Mountain if you feel adventurous!
Swiftwater Falls is conveniently situated at the point where the Falling Waters Trail intersects with Dry Brook. This strategic location provides hikers with the opportunity to enjoy a close-up view of the falls, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the experience. Visitors can typically explore all of the waterfalls in about an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the pace of the hike.
Parking for the Falling Waters Trail is readily available, with a spacious paved lot located at the Old Bridle Path Trailhead off I-93, known as the Styles Bridges Highway. Additionally, there is parking across I-93 at the Lafayette Place Campground, which offers convenient access to the trailhead via an underground highway tunnel. Fortunately, parking is free, making it even more accessible for those eager to embark on an adventure to discover the natural splendor of Swiftwater Falls and its scenic companions in Franconia Notch State Park.
