About This Location

The Wellfleet Beachcomber, perched majestically on the shores of Cahoon Hollow Beach in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, stands as a testament to history and the enduring spirit of Cape Cod. Originally one of the nine Life-Saving Service stations that graced the Outer Cape, it has a rich legacy that dates back to 1872 when these stations were established as a part of the Department of Treasury. These stations were a vital part of the coastal community, providing safety and rescue services to sailors in peril.

In 1953, Russell Gallagher, with cherished memories of his boyhood summers spent at Cahoon Hollow Beach, breathed new life into the old station. He transformed it into the Beachcomber, a charming inn where the very essence of the beach was woven into its décor. Driftwood and nautical treasures, combed from the shore, adorned the inn's rooms.

For 25 years, Mr. Gallagher owned and operated the Beachcomber, ensuring its place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. In 1978, he passed the torch to the current owners, who have continued to uphold its legacy of seaside hospitality.

What makes the Beachcomber even more remarkable is its location within the Cape Cod National Seashore, a preserved area established by President John F. Kennedy in 1961. While the Seashore envelops the surrounding landscapes, the Beachcomber stands as one of only eleven privately held commercial properties that were "grandfathered" in, allowing it to remain a cherished part of the National Seashore.

Perched atop Cahoon Hollow Beach's dunes, the Beachcomber offers more than just a dining experience; it provides a front-row seat to the grandeur of the Atlantic Ocean. With panoramic views that stretch as far as the eye can see, it captures the very essence of Cape Cod's natural beauty.

Over the years, the Beachcomber has garnered numerous accolades, making it an iconic establishment not only on Cape Cod but throughout the nation. Awards such as "One of the Best Seaside Dining Spots in New England" by Yankee Magazine, "Best Raw Bar," "Best Outdoor Dining," "Best Specialty Cocktail," and "Best Entertainment" in Cape Cod Life Readers' Polls, and even the distinction of being named the "Best Bar in America" by Esquire, all speak to its enduring charm.

With an outdoor bar overlooking the Atlantic and an indoor bar situated within the heart of a former US Lifesaving Station, the Beachcomber offers an experience that is steeped in history and infused with the natural beauty of Cape Cod.

And as you toast to the scenic views and coastal heritage, don't forget to try the legendary Goombay Smash, the Beachcomber's house drink that has been savored by millions. Cheers to the Beachcomber, where history, hospitality, and the allure of the sea come together in perfect harmony.

When it comes to parking at The Beachcomber, during the summer months, the fee (for non-residents) is $30. The $30 is actually exchanged for a $30 voucher to The Beachcomber where it can be used for food or apparel. On nice summer days, the lot fills up very easily so it is wise to arrive early. During the off-season, there is no parking fee and the lot is never too busy.
