The Lost Kitchen in Freedom, Maine is a beautiful location and one of the best restaurants in the country. Freedom, Maine is a rural town located about 20 miles from the coast. It is mainly made up of farmland and backcountry roads. On the main road (Belfast Road) there’s a small general store, post office, and a gas station – that’s it. Well, there is also The Lost Kitchen.
The Lost Kitchen is located right off Main Street on a side street named Mill Street. The Lost Kitchen building actually used to be a hydropowered first mill that was opened in 1834. A waterfall flows right next to the mill and there is a creek too. Due to the age of the mill and its unique features, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places at the “Mill at Freedom Falls” in 2012.
The mill itself had been abandoned for decades before Erin French, a Freedom native, decided to turn it into a restaurant in the summer of 2014. French never saw herself opening a restaurant or living in Freedom, but a series of life events brought her back to her hometown and ready to serve. Over the years, French and her team have built The Lost Kitchen into a very special spot and a major food destination. The restaurant serves dishes made with the freshest locally sourced ingredients in a beautiful, low-stress atmosphere with some of the friendliest servers. French has even been named a James Beard award nominee and a semifinalist for the Best Chefs in America in 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2020. The demand for reservations at the restaurant are so high that The Lost Kitchen has developed a postcard reservation system. People who seek a reservation must send in a postcard each spring and if their card is drawn, they will be granted a date and time.
