About This Location

Perched proudly on Ocean Road in Narragansett, Rhode Island, The Towers is a historic building that stands as the lone survivor of the 1880s Narragansett Pier Casino. A testament to a bygone era, this architectural gem continues to captivate visitors with its rich history and enduring presence.

The Narragansett Pier Casino, a masterpiece of Victorian Shingle-style architecture, graced the coastal landscape between 1883 and 1886. The distinguished architectural firm McKim, Mead & White, renowned for their work on iconic structures like the Washington Arch in New York City, the Boston Public Library, and the Rosecliff mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, was behind the design of this elegant establishment.

During the Gilded Age, the Narragansett Pier Casino was a vibrant hub of activity, offering a wide array of sports and entertainment. It thrived as a symbol of opulence and leisure until tragedy struck on September 12, 1900, in the form of the Great Fire. A devastating blaze ignited in the vicinity of the Rockingham Hotel, quickly spreading to consume the Casino. However, amidst the destruction, the enduring granite walls of The Towers remained as a poignant reminder of what once was.

In their steadfast commitment to preserving this cherished relic of history, the Friends of the Historic Narragansett Towers, Inc. emerged as a 501(c)(3) membership-based organization. They have played a pivotal role in providing both funding and operational support for the ongoing restoration and maintenance of The Towers. Today, this iconic structure serves as a venue for a diverse range of events, from weddings, dances, and dinners to plays and fashion shows. Its proximity to Narragansett town beach renders it an ideal gathering place for various social occasions, ensuring that it remains an integral part of the community's cultural tapestry.

On November 25, 1969, The Towers was accorded a monumental honor as it was added to the prestigious National Register of Historic Places. This distinction is a testament to its exceptional architectural and historical significance. With the reference number 69000001, assigned by the National Park Service, The Towers continues to stand as a beacon of history, resilience, and community in Narragansett, Rhode Island.
