About This Location

Trout River Falls, also known as Three Holes, is a pretty waterfall and swimming hole located in Montgomery, Vermont. The waterfall has a total height of about 30 feet and it features two main drops. Both main falls are about 10 feet tall. Additionally, some smaller waterfalls can be found. They drop in a unique formation consisting of plunges and cascades.

What truly separates these falls from others in the state are the awesome pools at their bases which are excellent for swimming in during the summer months. There are three main swimming holes found at Trout River Falls, hence its nickname, Three Holes. The top pool, which offers the most swimming space, is fed by the largest waterfall. It is frequently shaded because there are high cliffs on either side of it. The ideal location for jumping off rocks is here. As always, be careful and have fun!

When it comes to accessing Trout River Falls and Three Holes, things get a little complicated. There is no established trail leading directly to the waterfall. That said, there is a dirt pullover area located along Hazens Notch Road / VT-58 which is often used by visitors. Visitors park here and then walk along Trout River until the falls are in view. To get to the base of the falls, visitors must cross the river. After crossing the river, visitors can scatter up Hannah Clark Brook to enjoy the different drops and pools. Definitely pack some water shoes for this adventure! There may be an additional route, but it is unclear at this time.
