About This Location

The Andover Memorial Covered Bridge, also affectionately known as the Hop River Covered Bridge, is a charming gem nestled in Andover, Connecticut. Completed in 2012, this pedestrian covered bridge carries the Hop River State Park Trail gracefully over Hebron Road, offering a picturesque and functional addition to the region's natural beauty.

Spanning an impressive 138 feet in length and measuring 10 feet in width, the Andover Memorial Covered Bridge serves as a vital link for hikers, bicyclists, and horseback riders, ensuring uninterrupted travel along the Hop River State Park trail. Whether you're venturing west to Manchester or east to Willimantic, this covered bridge provides a scenic pathway for outdoor enthusiasts to explore the captivating landscapes of Connecticut.

The construction of this covered bridge was far from an easy feat. While its not unheard of for construction projects to take a few years, the Andover Memorial Covered Bridge's journey to fruition took over a decade. The project, initiated in 2001, has encountered numerous challenges, including design alterations, hearings, meetings, and interactions with Echo Bridge Inc. of Elmira, N.Y., the manufacturer responsible for the bridge's construction. Despite over $418,000 in state and federal funding being invested in this endeavor, the bridge remained unfinished at the manufacturer's site for many years.

The importance of this bridge to the community cannot be overstated. Before its construction, a dangerous gap marred the 20-mile trail, requiring hikers to navigate steep abandoned railroad embankments, rocky side trails, and busy roads like Route 316 near Route 6. The completion of the Andover Memorial Covered Bridge eliminated this hazard, providing a safe and scenic passage for all.

This Howe truss bridge, crafted by Echo Bridge in Elmira, NY, was assembled in a factory and transported to its current location, where it was meticulously placed into position in April 2012. Despite its relatively recent construction, the bridge exudes an old-world charm, beckoning visitors to step back in time and savor its timeless beauty.

For those eager to explore this unique attraction, a convenient parking area awaits at the end of Monument Lane, just a short 100 yards from the covered bridge. Parking is complimentary, and from this vantage point, you can catch a glimpse of the bridge while strolling down Hebron Road. To experience the bridge up close, follow the Hop River State Park Trail accessible from the parking area. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, the Andover Memorial Covered Bridge welcomes you to immerse yourself in its rich heritage and scenic splendor. While the bridge is not technically old compared to other covered bridges, it sure is beautiful!
