About This Location

Nestled in the picturesque town of Chester, Connecticut, the Brushmill Covered Bridge stands as a charming testament to both history and architectural beauty. This iconic bridge stretches gracefully across the waters of Pataconk Brook, spanning an impressive 70 feet. But it's not just a bridge; it serves as the enchanting entrance to a renowned restaurant known as "The Brushmill by the Waterfall."

Walking into The Brushmill by the Waterfall is a captivating experience. As you step onto the bridge, you're immediately transported to a bygone era. The bridge's unique design and craftsmanship beckon visitors to admire its rustic charm, while the soothing sound of rushing water below adds to the enchantment. An informative sign at the entrance of the bridge provides valuable insights into its rich history, taking you on a journey through time.

The Brushmill property and its buildings have played a vital role in the region's history. In the early 1800s, the land was home to two thriving industries: a grist and sawmill operated by Pomeroy Watrous and a woodworking shop managed by George Gladding. The property changed hands over the years, with S. Carlos Silliman eventually taking ownership and establishing a large factory. Initially, this factory produced auger bits, but the business soon transitioned to the manufacturing of carpet sweepers and various types of brushes, a trade that continued until the 1960s.

Today, the Brushmill Covered Bridge is situated on private property, owned by The Brushmill by the Waterfall restaurant. Visitors to the restaurant have the privilege of parking in the lot conveniently located in front of the covered bridge. The welcoming atmosphere created by the restaurant's presence suggests that the bridge can also be appreciated by the general public, inviting all to admire its timeless beauty and historical significance.
