Description
Giles Dewey Covered Bridge is a beautiful and unique covered bridge located in downtown Stowe, Vermont. The bridge was built in 1973 to bring the sidewalk along Mountain Road over the Waterbury River. It’s an iconic covered walkway that welcomes pedestrians to Stowe village and the iconic Mountain Road. The bridge spans 150 feet long and is about 8 feet wide. It is currently open to pedestrians.
The bridge was originally known as the Stowe Sidewalk Covered Bridge before it was dedicated to Giles Dewey in 2016. Giles was born, raised, and married in Stowe. He is part of the 5th generation of Deweys who have operated a family farm in Stowe Hollow. As a young man, Giles took over the farm and combined running the dairy business with having a family and making a significant contribution to a wide range of public services. He was active in the Rotary, the Masons, the Eastern Star, and the Community Church. He was also involved in local and state politics, serving 30 years as a selectman and seven terms as a state representative.
Visiting this covered bridge is a unique and charming experience that can transport you back in time to a simpler era. It’s not only a functional structure that provides safe passage over a body of water but also serves as a cultural and historical landmark that reflects the ingenuity of its builders. This bridge is beautifully crafted with intricate designs, and its covered roof provides a sense of coziness and intimacy as you walk through it.
