Nubble Lighthouse: A Coastal Gem in Cape Neddick, Maine

Nubble Lighthouse, also known as the Cape Neddick Light Station, stands as an iconic symbol of Maine's coastal beauty, capturing the hearts of residents and visitors alike. This historic lighthouse, perched on Nubble Island just 100 yards off the coast of Cape Neddick in York, Maine, is widely regarded as one of the state's most picturesque landmarks.

A Beacon Born from Necessity

The need for a lighthouse in this area was evident long before Nubble's construction. Plans dating back to 1837 hinted at the necessity of guiding mariners safely through these perilous waters. It wasn't until 1874, under the approval of President Rutherford B. Hayes, that $15,000 was allocated for the construction of a lighthouse on this rocky outcrop. On July 1, 1879, the vision became a reality when the Knubble Lighthouse, as it was known then, was completed. A 4th order light was ignited, casting its reassuring glow upon the sea.

Nubble Lighthouse, constructed with sturdy brick walls and adorned with cast-iron sheathing, stands 41 feet tall. Its elevated focal height of 88 feet, achieved by the steep rocky islet on which it sits, ensured its visibility to mariners navigating these treacherous waters.

From Lighthouse Service to Coast Guard Stewardship

For decades, the Lighthouse Service diligently maintained Nubble Lighthouse. However, in 1939, ownership transitioned to the United States Coast Guard, and the lighthouse was officially renamed Cape Neddick Light Station.

Over time, funding issues and technological advancements led to automation, and in July 1987, Nubble Light saw its last keeper. The transition marked the end of an era but also ensured the lighthouse's continued operation and maintenance.

A Treasured Historic Landmark

Nubble Lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places, a recognition of its vital role in maritime history and its enduring charm. This designation, granted on April 16, 1985 (reference number 85000844), underscores the lighthouse's significance in preserving Maine's rich maritime heritage.

A Local Treasure and National Icon

The joint efforts of the United States government and the Town of York secured the lighthouse's future. In 1997, the Town of York, Maine, was granted permanent protectorship of Nubble Lighthouse. Today, the Parks Department is responsible for its daily care, while the U.S. Coast Guard continues to maintain the navigational aids, including the light and horn. Remarkably, Nubble Lighthouse retains one of Maine's last eight Fresnel lenses.

Visiting the Nubble Lighthouse

Sohier Park, located at the end of Sohier Park Road, offers ample parking with approximately 50 spaces, all free of charge. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy breathtaking up-close views of the lighthouse, making it an ideal spot for photography and reflection. For those wishing to capture more distant views, Long Sands Beach in York, Maine, offers excellent perspectives of Nubble Lighthouse against the backdrop of the stunning coastline.

A Beacon for All Humanity

In a testament to its enduring appeal, a photograph of Nubble Lighthouse was included onboard the Voyager I spacecraft during its mission in 1977. Alongside images of other prominent human achievements such as the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal, NASA sought to showcase the beauty and significance of Nubble Lighthouse to any potential extraterrestrial discoverers. It stands as a testament to what humanity has accomplished on Earth, transcending borders and cultures.
