About This Location

In the picturesque landscape of Brewster, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod, lies a tranquil oasis known as the Quivett Creek Conservation Area. Part of the larger Quivett Creek Subwatershed, which spans both Brewster and Dennis, this conservation area covers a sizable 1,415 acres. The subwatershed is a testament to the region's natural beauty, remaining relatively untouched and undeveloped. Quivett Creek is a remarkable coastal stream system, with its vast marsh expanse playing host to an annual herring run, all the way to its serene headwaters at Bound Brook Pond.

One of the unique features of the land around Quivett Creek is its identification as a major Marine Water Recharge Area. However, the tranquility of this region has not been without its challenges. Crowe’s Pasture, a beloved nature area neighboring the creek, has been at the center of discussions concerning potential development. Keen on preserving its pristine nature, the Town of Dennis took a proactive step in August 2001. They nominated a 250-acre portion of land, which includes both Crowe’s Pasture and Quivett Neck off Route 6A, as a District of Critical Planning Concern. This strategic move temporarily halts any development, allowing time for the implementation of strict zoning regulations to protect the area's ecological and cultural significance.

Visitors to the Quivett Creek Conservation Area are greeted by a quaint boardwalk offering captivating views of the marsh. The presence of picnic tables and benches adds to its charm, making it an ideal spot for a family outing, a photography session, or a peaceful day spent reading. Animal lovers will be delighted to know that their furry companions are welcome here, though they should be kept on a leash to ensure the preservation of the area's natural habitat.

Accessibility is convenient, with a dedicated parking spot available in a dirt lot along the historic Old King's Highway. Though the parking area might be modest in size, it's free and usually sufficient for the area's visitors.

While the Quivett Creek Conservation Area offers a serene escape, those looking for more extensive trails, panoramic views, and additional amenities might want to venture to Crowes Pasture Conservation Area. Additionally, a stone's throw away is the Cape Cod Museum Of Natural History. It's a fantastic establishment that not only educates visitors about the unique ecology of Quivett Creek but also delves deeper into the rich tapestry of Cape Cod's natural wonders.
