About This Location

Sandy Neck Beach Park in Barnstable, Massachusetts, offers an enthralling blend of sun, sand, and serenity. Nestled on Cape Cod, the park boasts of the popular Sandy Neck Beach, a magnet for both locals and tourists during the summertime. The beach is well-equipped, providing amenities like ample parking, lifeguards, restrooms, a snack shack, changing rooms, and picnic tables. Still, the real gem of this destination has to be the Sandy Neck Dunes.

Stretching over 5 miles, the Sandy Neck Dunes lie just to the east of the main parking area. The landscape is reminiscent of the captivating dunes found along the Dune Shack Trail in Provincetown. A trail through the dunes, accompanied by an access road, offers visitors an opportunity to immerse themselves in this natural beauty. The road is often used by those with beach-driving permits and residents of the Sandy Neck Colony. This colony is located at the furthest tip of Sandy Neck and is the location of the iconic Sandy Neck Lighthouse.

The dunes, with their sprawling expanse, are open to visitors throughout the year. There may, however, be occasional restrictions during June and July when endangered piping plovers nest in the area. To venture into the dunes, visitors can park at the Sandy Neck Marsh Trailhead, which is conveniently situated on Sandy Neck Road, right before the entrance to the beach. Although popular in the summer, if this parking area is full, visitors can use the main beach parking for a fee of $20.

If you're planning to visit between May 15 and September 15, it's crucial to note that dogs are not permitted during this period. This ensures that both visitors and the diverse wildlife of the dunes can coexist harmoniously.

For those wishing to extend their experience and truly bask in the tranquillity of the dunes, the Sandy Neck Camp Sites are an ideal choice. Located a few miles down the beach from the trailhead, these campsites offer an immersive dune experience. Tent camping costs $20 per night, while those preferring a lean-to camping setup will pay $20 per person, per night.

Sandy Neck Beach Park is more than just a beach destination; it's a testament to the beauty and resilience of nature. Over thousands of years, this barrier beach has evolved into a 4,700-acre haven of dunes, maritime forests, and marshes. This dynamic landscape offers a rich ecological tapestry and numerous recreational opportunities. While many come to bask under the sun and relish the ocean's might, there's so much more to explore and appreciate. From the dunes' shifting sands to the rhythmic waves, every visit promises a new perspective and a deeper connection to the majesty of nature.
