About This Location

The Wonderland Trail in Southwest Harbor, Maine, offers a tranquil and picturesque hiking experience that provides stunning views of Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island, and the surrounding landscapes. While Mount Desert Island is renowned for hosting the iconic Acadia National Park, with millions of visitors flocking to the island each year, Wonderland remains a hidden gem where you can enjoy a more serene and unspoiled natural environment.

The trailhead for Wonderland can be found along Seawall Road, situated on the southern tip of the Southwest Harbor Peninsula. The trailhead parking lot accommodates around ten cars, but additional parking is available along the roadside. Since Wonderland is officially part of Acadia National Park, it's important to have an Acadia Pass when visiting.

The Wonderland Trail is an out-and-back hike covering a distance of 1.4 miles. The trail terrain is remarkably flat, owing to its history as an old gravel fire road before being repurposed into a hiking trail. As you journey through the woods towards the shoreline, you'll experience a sense of tranquility, with opportunities to encounter wildflowers and observe various bird species.

Upon reaching the shore, you'll be greeted by a rocky coastline adorned with tidal pools and a pebble beach. This unique coastal environment offers not only a chance to appreciate the natural beauty but also panoramic views of Mount Desert Island and the neighboring islands. While exploring this area, it's important to exercise caution and follow some guidelines. Always face the water, especially when near the shore, and explore during the ebbing tide. Additionally, handle any creatures in the tidepools gently and respectfully.

Parking for Wonderland is readily available along Seawall Road, right at the trailhead, and parking here is free of charge. As an added bonus, be sure to explore the nearby Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, located just a short drive down the road from Wonderland. This charming lighthouse offers another opportunity to appreciate the coastal beauty of the region and its maritime heritage.
